In a few months, I will be moving abroad for the first time in my life. I’m feeling pretty nervous about it. During this move, I’ll be leaving the country for 18 months (a year and a half) with the potential option of staying even longer. I’ll be taking my wife and our two young children with us.

Can anybody offer any tips or advice on such a long-distance move? I don’t want anything to go wrong.

Let me guess – you’re moving because of work, right?

Yup. I’ll be moving to Canada. Edmonton, to be more precise.

It seems like a pretty big move, especially for your first time. There are lots of things to take care of. I suggest you start the ball rolling as soon as possible. That way, you have lots of time to plan and take care of everything.

First things first, I suggest you get some help. Ask one or two close relatives/friends that you can depend on to take care of anything that you may have missed. Make sure that you sign a document giving them some kind of authority. Then, they can act on your behalf if anything is required.

Good idea. I have some relatives I can depend on to act on my behalf, if required. I will try and get that sorted ASAP.

It’s a good idea to delegate certain responsibilities to your loved ones, especially non-financial matters. That way, you’ll be a lot less stressed not handling everything by yourself. For the financial documents and legal procedures, it’s best that you take care of those yourself instead of relying on somebody else.

Since you have kids, make sure you take care of all the necessary arrangements regarding school and health matters. These are important things that you should finalize, both here and in the new country.

Also, find out if you need insurance and things like that. If you aren’t giving up your citizenship, would you still be covered here? Learn more about that.

Have you found a moving company yet? It’s best to use a local Canadian moving company that knows the area well. The last thing you absolutely want is to have all your personal items and belongings lost en route!

Yup, I’m already in contact with Matco Moving Solutions, so I know moving my furniture won’t be a problem.
